U2 - Vertigo

I will always have a soft place in my heart for U2. They were part of my earliest musical development. The Joshua Tree was the soundtrack to my middle school experience. Achtung Baby got me through high school and Zooropa pretty much lived in my stereo at my first apartment. Somewhere along the way though, I kind of lost interest. They didn’t really change, I did. Well, actually it was also that Bono turned into some kind of rock icon that I couldn’t really relate to anymore. Anyway, unlike a lot of other bands that have stayed together as long as these guys have, they seem to still be relevant to the masses and sell a ton of records, so good for them. This is the first single off their next record How to Dismantle and Atomic Bomb due out November 23rd.

I couldn’t believe there were no comments on this track, so I thought I’d leave one. U2 records great singles, but none of their albums ever seemed consistent enough to make me want to own it. (One exception — their third album, War. And, to be fair, I haven’t heard Zooropa.) This new track continues their tradition of perfection in simplicity. It kicks butt like “Elevation” from the last album. It is immaculately produced, yet retains the spark of spontaneity in all aspects of performance, especially Bono’s vocal interjections. With this as “exhibit A,” I fully expect their new CD to have three or four or five songs that endear themselves to me, and five or more that I’m completely indifferent to.

This single is great… Like all U2’s songs. Bono and his band have made a fantastic journey into differents kinds of sounds during the years from rock (war) to pop (all that you can’t leave behind) with dance (achtung baby) and techno (zooropa, pop) experience … With Vertigo, “How to dismantle an Atomic Bomb” seems to look like their firsts albums … They’re just the greatests! Thanks for all … Cyril (Noumea, New Caledonia)
