The Headphones - Shit Talker

January 28th, 2005 by EJ

All week long, I’ve pined over whether or not to share this piece of musical excellence with the people. But since I can’t seem to get a friggin’ phone call returned by a certain someone at a certain label with whom I’ve been acquainted with for over ten years to ask them, the answer, apparently, is a resounding ‘yes, give it to all of your friends’ (either that or I will bet you the phone will start ringing now).

Ever since I got this Pedro The Lion side project in the mail, The Headphones have been on automatic replay. David Bazan and Tim Walsh have taken a Postal Service-like turn that is going to end up as the album of the summer. The Headphones’ self-titled album, due May 10th from Suicide Squeeze, bears a strong resemblance to Pedro The Lion save one tricky point — keyboards, not guitars. Influenced by the sounds of Depeche Mode, they have branched off and created a sound which is not only as good or better than the bands which influenced the sound, it’s a record everyone is going to need to want to have when it hits the streets. This song, “Shit Talker,” is a prime example of exactly why everyone should keep their ears peeled and their hearts open to this gem of an album.
