M.I.A. - Bucky Done Gone

February 1st, 2005 by EJ

Did you sleep through 2004? If you Rip Van Winkled the year away, you might not have heard about the world’s hottest Sri Lankan export since those shirts you bought at The Gap. M.I.A. has been all over the place, and two of her songs, “Galang” and “Sunshowers” were on almost every critics Top 10 lists for the year. Her much anticipated full-length CD, Arular is about to hit the streets and bring the massive to the masses. She doesn’t mince words in her revolutionary dancehall chat, she frequently gets right to the point. It’s the revolution you can move your ass to, and nobody standing still is allowed. The album is no less of a revelation than the two singles that preceeded it, both of which appear on this release. This track, “Bucky Done Gone”, is one of my favorites off the album and I’m very excited to share it with you. “London, quieten down, I need to make a sound…New York, quieten down, I need to make a sound…” blazes her vocals across the dancehall/hip-hop backdrop. No question: this is the heat.

Everyone is gonna need to have this album like they need oxygen and water. It’s one of the first must-have CD’s of this year.
