MURDOCKS - Segue

February 23rd, 2005 by EJ

Last year, just about this time, Austin-based Murdocks flew into my ears like a wayward pigeon bumping the window on the top floor of a skyscraper. Yes, I reached deep into my brimming bag of promos and just as I thought I had recovered the phone number of this hottie whom I had let talk my ear off about the importance of Quizno’s to the world economy at the Two Way Inn at 4 a.m., an EP just called Murdocks EP made its way into my hands. It was Pavement-y and Pixies-esque, it was poppy and and punky, it was garage-y and new wave-y, and it was such a tease. The single from that EP, “Death of a French Whore” really latched onto my skull. Everything I want in a band and nothing I don’t, isn’t that what I always say? Imagine my thrill when I found out recently they have a full-length on the way and that, much like the EP that started it all, it’s excellent. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Libertines and White Stripes fans take note because several of these songs, including this one, are as good or better than anything I’ve heard from either of those two. Don’t just take my word for it, though — check out the track and, once you realize I’m not just hearing things, head over to their website to preview the song “Saddest Star” also. Surrenderender will see its way to pop/punk/indie rock fans everywhere on April 19th. If you pre-order the CD, you get it for $8.39 which is like 4 bucks off the regular price (or 4 Deluxe Bean Burritos at Taco Bell depending on how you look at these sorts of things). Of if you happen to be around any of these places where they’ll be playing live, you can pick up a copy at the show.
