Communique - Perfect Weapon

March 27th, 2005 by Rachelandthecity

When I went to check out the two opening bands at the show at The Young Avenue Deli Saturday night, I never expected the synth heavy dance rock of Communique to be played on the same stage as the beer soaked brawl anthems of our hometown heroes Lucero. But that’s why I always show up for the opening act, sometimes you are soooooo pleasantly surprised. I stood in the audience and couldn’t help but dance along to the new-wave influenced songs as I caught the eyes of all the other people in the crowd bobbing their heads in approval.

Anyway, they put on a great show. From what I could find online about them, which wasn’t much, they have extensive touring experience as most of the band was molded from former underground Bay Area punk band American Steel. They added some synth and decided to teach the punkers how to dance without bruising each other. I should be able to tell you a lot more about these guys since I chatted them up after the show, but by that time I was covered in beer from the Lucero portion of the show and a little trashed, so I was just doing my best not to slur my words. They probably thought I was just another random groupie, which isn’t too far from the truth. I’m not ususally skerd to bullshit with a band, especially ones playing in Memphis, but these guys had a real star quality and I felt a little intimidated. But they were super nice and didn’t blow me off, so they passed the hipster test. Anyway, they are playing the Knitting Factory in NYC MONDAY NIGHT! GO SEE THEM! Check their website for more tourdates. I’ve added the video for this track in the videos section. Tell Rory he missed out by not letting me buy him a burger at the Two-Way.
