Kid Sublime - Turn Out the Lights

March 31st, 2005 by Rachelandthecity

I wish I had more to offer about Kid Sublime, the Amsterdam-based deejay and producer behind this sexy, soulful number. I’ve read that he’s one of the Rednose Distrikt boys — who me and Rachel saw spin over New Year’s — but I’m not so sure about that. I do know that this track originally appeared on the “Fruit Sugar” EP that came out last summer on Kindred Spirits, the fabulous indie label from the Dam that supports everything from the neo-Sun Ra jamming of Build an Ark to the Todd Rundgren-esque pop of Benny Sings. The label finally put out its first compilation, “Witness Future Vintage,” which includes highlights from the beautifully packaged catalog along with a grip of exclusives. I picked up a copy at the affiliated Rush Hour Recordshop when I was over in Holland. However, whichever Rednose Distrikt cat who checked me out forgot to put the damn disc in the box before he put it in the bag and gave it back to me. They finally mailed me a copy, and “Witness Future Vintage” has been a regular at home and at gigs ever since.

Just a sampling of what’s on there: The Masters at Work-esque “Puerto Rico” by Peven Everett (who sang on Roy Davis Jr.’s proto-UK garage classic “Gabriel”); unearthed Latin jazz by Francisco Mora Catlett (”Amazona”); backpacker hip-hop from Jneiro Jarel; hot neo-soul from New York band Heavy. All styles representing, something for everyone at the party.
