Ardent Sessions: John Paul Keith and the One Four Fives

Jack Johnson - Flake

April 27th, 2005 by Rachelandthecity

This weekend is one of the biggest events of the year in Downtown Memphis. The Beale Street Music Festival is an annual event of debauchery on the river. Over three days there will be more than 100,000 visitors to the thirty-three acres overlooking the Mighty Mississippi, right on the heels of historic Beale Street. The hill people from all over Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas will come into the big city and take over Riverside Drive to eat funnel cakes, drink Budweiser and listen to C-level rock and A-list blues. It’s not as bad as all that, people actually travel from all over the world to hear blues, rock, gospel, R&B, alternative, and soul in the city where rock ‘n roll was reared and the blues were born. Many up-and-comers have hit this festival before they went on to the more popular ones including Beck, Ben Folds Five, Paula Cole, The Black Crowes, and The Wallflowers. If these acts seem dated now, it gives a little perspective to one of this year’s headliners: The Killers.

Four of your favorite bloggers from this site have been asked by The Commercial Appeal to blog the event this weekend. You can check out our posts here. The site also lists the line-ups, you can get more info about Memphis In May and, of course, heckle us in the comments. There’s a rad picture of me and Josie from Saliva. It will be just like being there. In the meantime, check out my favorite track from one of the other highly anticipated acts this year: Jack Johnson.
