Spouse - Voices Carry

April 27th, 2005 by EJ

Back in December, I hope you had a chance to read my review of the band Spouse’s 2004 CD entitled Are You Gonna Kiss Or Wave Goodbye?. In the review I openly praised Spouse’s affinity for creating beautiful indie rock which favored some of the best indie bands of the past 15-20 years. I was pleased to see that my memory of Spouse’s dynamic performance had lived up to itself. Warm, driving, beautiful melodic indie rock that Insound correctly describes as “Death Cab for Cutie meets Yo La Tengo” deserves your attention. Yes, you college and indie radio stations really need to check them out, particularly the song “Here Comes The Headache” from their latest CD. Besides enjoying the show tremendously, I was informed by J.J. O’Connell, drummer for Spouse, that he would also be lending his drumming talents to a soon-to-be-released new recording from the highly prolific indie rock band New Radiant Storm King. Guitarist and vocalist Jose Ayerve was kind enough to hand me a couple of gifts, one a limited-edition EP they have on their spring tour and the other a 7-track EP they have out called “Catch 22″. In addition to a variety of new songs, the EP also features this slowed-down and moody cover of ‘Til Tuesday’s classic “Voices Carry”. As I was writing this, my roommate walked in and said “that’s one of the best covers I’ve heard in a long, long time”. I have to agree. Enjoy it, then be sure to check them out on tour in a city near you this spring.
