White Stripes - Blue Orchid

April 15th, 2005 by EJ

Needless to say, everyone is excited about a new White Stripes album. Recorded and mixed in 20 days, Get Behind Me Satan ought to give us all something to jump around to for a bit. This single, “Blue Orchid” is crashing drums, heavy guitars a la Leslie West of Mountain (ever heard the song “Mississippi Queen”?), with Jack White taking a soulful turn belting out (in amazing falsetto) the song’s premise, “You took a wild orchid/You took a wild orchid and turned it blue”. It reminds me so much of Electric Six, I’m hard pressed not to think it’s an outtake from one of their records. It’s immediate gratification, hard fast and out of control, just the way it was created.

Humorous Update: Trendspotters take notes, the word is out. Not that eBay ever needs a reason to email you about anything, but they’ve apparently picked up on something….

Listen to it and tell us what you think.
