Ardent Sessions: John Paul Keith and the One Four Fives

GoGoGo AirHeart - Witch Hunt

GGGAH. I’m willing to bet that as much as their name is made fun of by Chunklet, H20 still thinks that GoGoGo AirHeart is a good band. Despite member fluctuations, or even perhaps on account of them, as well as not restricting themselves to one label has enabled this band to release 5 albums, 3 singles, 2 eps, and be included on a number of compilations. To top it off, another single is supposed to be out right now and they have another full length due out in September on underground favorite GSL.

So why don’t you own everything from this band? 1) Some of their stuff is difficult to find. I’m still looking for the 90 Day Men split ep. GGGAH sprung out of the San Diego/Sacramento hardcore scene of the 90s. (Jimmy Lavelle of The Locust, Album Leaf was once in the band.) As is common of most hardcore scenes the kids love their vinyl, and they love it in limited quantities. That’s why some old straight-edge singles go for $100+ on ebay. Also, you can’t get it all from one place. They’ve released stuff on about as many different labels as they have albums. 2) GGGAH is a project band. Meaning that they don’t get together and practice daily/weekly like most other bands. They send tapes back and forth through the mail. (Sound familiar? Yeah, they were doing it long before that piece of crap that decided to use the name of the mailing system as the band name came onto the scene.) 3) So that translates to a lot of overdubs and whatnot, something that is extremely difficult to reproduce in a live setting with only 3 or 4 people. 4) They can’t be pigeonholed. Their songs range from reggae and dub influenced (now you see why I’m posting about them!) to funk, punk, psych, and disco all with an avant-garde flair. This is perhaps because of Mike Vermillion’s vocals. They differ throughout the songs but I find them to generally be sort of high-pitched and strained, producing a, for me, truthful effect.

Bonus x1: For Your Will has an experimental/dubbish sound. (Windows)
Bonus x2: So Good has a punk sound. From the upcoming album “Rat Sing Sing.” (Mp3)
