Broadcast - America’s Boy
While perusing the Broadcast forum I learned a rather interesting tidbit regarding some songnames and members. In short, Broadcast started out as five members and as members have left songs have been titled for their leaving: “Minus One” and “Minus Two.” However, one more person has left Broadcast, leaving just Trish Kennan and James Cargill but no “Minus Three” appears on the “America’s Boy” single that was released today or on the full length due the 20th of September (the 19th for Europe). Another interesting tidbit: supposedly the song “Goodbye Girls” is on the new album (or was supposed to be on the new album), “Tender Buttons,” but it is not in the track listing. Hm?
Several years ago while posting on MOC (yes, cruising Internet forums is, in fact, all I do) I asked for albums that reminded people of Autumn. Broadcast’s “Ha Ha Sound” was suggested. I was able to find an mp3 at Insound for “Pendulum” and was immediately taken. Trish’s voice sounds like she should be singing title tracks for James Bond 007 films (at least Sean Connery Bond). There is an ethereal sexiness that combines with the music’s psychedelic leanings… it makes me think about scarves and light sweaters and tea whenever I hear it.
So now that Broadcast is just two people they’ve had to… I don’t want to say make compromises, so how about adjustments to their instrumentation, incorporating several synths. And I don’t think I’ll ever use compromise to describe Broadcast. The new songs sound great and still capture that ethereal feeling even with the synths.
