Levy - You Be Sweet
I miss living in New York City. I miss cabbing it to the club to feast eyes on the cause celebre of the moment, getting lit to the gills and walking away pissed when the band stinks. Yeah, where I live isn’t NYC (and frankly I love our local music scene better), but from time to time I strike gold in my promo pile, and I get nearly the same feeling I would get leaving that same club after a solid show: I have to tell someone. For that reason, I would like to make a motion to the high court of the internerd that melody should be allowed back into music, songwriting should be given credit, and Levy should be swept to the head of the class. Bringing me oodles of neo-pop a la Belle & Sebastian, Jesus and Mary Chain, The Smiths and Stereolab, Levy’s album Rotten Love is nothing short of a much-needed long deep breath. We’re talking melodic hooky indie that doesn’t come from across the ocean and doesn’t needlessly noodle for ten minutes at a whack. The candy is only slightly sour in the lonely hearts club, but somehow Levy has made the sour taste sweet. Run don’t walk. Levy is that band who I leave the club still thinking about in the cab home, who leaves me dancing carelessly up the stairs of my three-story walkup, no matter how shitfaced, lonely, or sleepy I feel when I get there. I can’t see you not feeling the same way.
