Ardent Sessions: What Made Milwaukee Famous

Nortec Collective - Bar Infierno

August 18th, 2005 by Rachelandthecity

‘Dem boys from south of the border are back with another helping of dubby, earthy Norteno electronica. Nortec Collective’s “Tijuana Sessions, Vol. 3″ is all about mood and a sense of place, with mariachi instrumentation lending an unmistakable Mexican flavor. Tubas squawk in the sub-bass register, accordions smothered in reverb disintegrate into feedback, and the scratching of the guiro kicks the beat along. There’s some meat to this music for the clubs, too. Check out the build in “Bar Infierno”; by the middle of the track, we’re in house territory, and the delicate guitar figure from up top has been chopped into a single insistent loop. I’m still making my way through this album, but so far I’m impressed as always by these guys’ unique vision. I expect “Tijuana Sessions, Vol. 3″ to be a grower. EMusic’s got the mp3 hookup.
