Xiu Xiu remains a fascinating mystery to me. The San Jose/Oakland/Seattle-based wonderchild of Cory McCullough, Caralee McElroy, and Jamie Stewart drives on through experimental punctuations, bumping into every gorgeous tin can and loveable clanky bottle top they encounter along the way. Though I didn’t jump up and down about their previous release this year, La Foret, I was delighted when I received a 7-inch from 5RC where Xiu Xiu and Devendra Banhart bust a Freaky Friday move a la Jodie Foster and her mother, covering each others songs for this limited release single. I’m needing to listen to the highly tongue-in-cheek Devendra Banhart cover of “Support Our Troops! OH!” more I think (I don’t get him at all really, maybe I need to see him live or something). But this Xiu Xiu cover of “The Body Breaks” is more than worth the price of admission.
