Ardent Sessions: What Made Milwaukee Famous

Mpho Skeef - Comin’ For Ya

September 21st, 2005 by Rachelandthecity

South Africa-born, London-bound singer Mpho Skeef is emerging as one of the more engaging voices in the British future soul scene. After appearing on the 2002 Spacek LP “Vintage Hi-Tech,” Skeef lent her talents to Bugz in the Attic’s club smash “Booty La-La,” which was embraced even by mainstream dance DJs like Pete Tong. With her latest single, “Comin’ For Ya,” Skeef heads back into leftfield territory, sounding like a less-stoned Erykah Badu over a skipping triplet beat. That’s Phuturistix aka Zed Bias on the production, building tension nicely but never resolving it, and leaving Skeef plenty of space to sell the irresistible hook. Pick this one up on mp3 on the new DanceTracks Digital site. And check out a nice interview with Mpho Skeef here. If you’re a vinyl fiend, pick up the “Comin’ For Ya” 12-inch from overseas here, and peep the sampler from Mpho’s forthcoming debut LP.
