Ardent Sessions: What Made Milwaukee Famous

Lady Sovereign - Hoodie

October 21st, 2005 by Rachelandthecity

Some of our like-minded cousins across the pond seem to be having a culture war with authorities as their “hoodies” are being singled out as a criminal’s garment and are being banned from being worn.(Insert puzzled wtf look!) As I sit here wearing my very own black hoodie, it’s sort of exciting to think that over in merry old England someone might see me on the street and think of me as a threat!

Luckily for the Brits, Lady Sovereign, a 19-year-old MC who blends grime, hip hop and pop, is ready to take a stand and save the hoodie. Not only did she get her mates The Bassment Jaxx to produce this track, she’s set up a website called Save The Hoodie where she proclaims:

“If someone commits a crime it’s not about what they are wearing, it’s about the person wearing it, a criminal is a criminal no matter what they wear. Don’t blame the innocent hoodie, you should be able to wear what you want!”

The site features an online petition. All supporters’ names will be printed off and presented by Lady Sovereign later this year to those in power responsible for the hoodie bans.

The site will also serve as a meeting place for those united against the stripping of civil liberties. Supporters will be invited to post up pictures of themselves in their favorite hoodie and get regular updates on new ways they can join the fight for the cause.

Fight the power ya’ll.
