Metric - Patriarch On A Vespa
I was in Nashville last Monday and after a day of record shopping (shout out to the wonderful people at Grimey’s) I came back to my friend’s house and heard a familiar voice coming from his computer. The breathy and almost naive voice of Emily Haines: immeadiately recognizable. Metric had played there the Thursday before and I had picked up a copy of the new album Live It Out while I was at the record store.
Live It Out is a louder, more raucous and personal album than Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? and setting aside the Foo Fighters Everlong-esque first track, Empty, it’s a great album. I’ve read interviews with Emily Haines and she has stated that her father taught her to write what she knows. It’s hard to believe that she knows 10 year old enemy soldiers but you can believe that she knows herself. The lyrics are more personal and aren’t as simply constructed and in some places not as biting or poignant as I.O.U. or Succexy from Old World Underground… but that’s a good thing. Those songs are catchy, which Metric is not going for on the new album. That’s not to say that you won’t find something similar, though. The Police And The Private delivers the familiar Metric, for which I’m still a sucker.
