Gomez - Don’t Make Me Laugh

April 27th, 2006 by Rachelandthecity

I just got off the phone with Ben Ottewell, singer/guitarist for the Mercury prize winning band Gomez. We chatted about Memphis, Sun Studios, John Lee Hooker, and Willie Dickson. But don’t let those names mislead you. Their music walks a fine line between hippie and hipster and should be an all around crowd pleaser for the young and old alike.

You can check out 3 songs off their upcoming release “How We Operate” on their Myspace Profile. I’ve heard the full album and it’s pretty darn spectacular. You can also check out the video for their first single on their official website. These guys are definitely on my must-see list. They’ll be playing Saturday May 6th at The Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis at 4PM on the Autozone Stage.

Here’s some record label mumbo jumbo:

On “How We Operate,” Gomez’s fifth studio album and first for ATO Records, they teamed with producer Gil Norton (Foo Fighters, Pixies) to make their most accessible, most finely-crafted disc to date, including infectious songs like the title track (and first single), as well as the somber “Notice,” the sentimental “See The World” and the buoyant “girlshapedlovedrug.” Entertainment Weekly writes, “Career high points like the peppy power-pop ‘Girlshapedlovedrug’ and peacenik sing-along ‘See the World’ point to a renovated Gomez and a winning new way to Operate.” U.S. tour kicks off May 3, including sets at the Beale Street Music Festival, Sasquatch! and Bonnaroo.
