Glass Candy - Nite Nurses 12"
When someone says ‘disco’ you think The Bee Gees, Gloria Gaynor, Boogie Nights, 54, etc… But just like any genre, disco (the music) has a dark side that you’ve probably never heard unless you’ve spent time and money digging up gems from the bins. I must say though that I’m not the first to come across artists such as Space, Cerrone, MECO, ORS, and even the more popular Giorgio Moroder or Salsoul Orchestra. Thankfully the minds behind Glass Candy have taken the off planet phasers and conga breakdowns and vocoders of the aforementioned artists and added some electric guitar and cacaphonous sax (or sex, either way) and come out with some 9-minute masterpieces that rival their influences.
It’s been a long process for mastermind Johnny Jewel. In the beginning Glass Candy and the Shattered Theatre released a couple of 7 inches and contributed to the infamous 31G compilation Dynamite With A Laserbeam: Queen Through The Meatgrinder Of 31G. Their cover of “The Fairy Feller’s Master Stroke” is what turned me on to the band. Their 7 inches and debut album “Love Love Love” could be described as glam punk, but it wasn’t until 2005 or so that their sound crystalized into the dark disco of “Life After Sundown.” Now they are in a cocoon waiting to emerge as some technicolor butterfly from Mars.
In the best underground celebrity fashion, Glass Candy have posted all of their songs for free on this fansite to combat the exhorbitant ebay prices of their rare 7 inches.
Johnny has also been helping friends Chromatics behind the boards. Catch both bands on tour now. Check their Myspace for a town near you. And note:
All new releases you can find on Troubleman Unlimted.
