Best of 2006 - Bob Castrone from Best. Week. Ever.

December 20th, 2006 by Rachelandthecity

I think I first became enamoured with Bob when he used to write the hilarious My Blog is Poop. I think I IM’ed him and told him that if I was living in NYC I would totally make him my boyfriend. It was early enough in his internet fame that those kind of sentiments were still thought of as charming and he didn’t block me, so I guess we’re cool…

Anyway, now you can find him blogging at BWE.tv for VH1. Just like his fellow co-hort Alex Blagg, he has let his personal site crust over like a sore on Paris Hilton’s ying yang…but I digress, he’s in the know, so I asked him what he’s been listening to this year. This list has been hipster approved.

5 Best Albums That I Don’t Mind You Knowing I Listen To

5. Ben Kweller, self-titled / Tom Petty “Highway Companion” - Since Ben Kweller wants to be Tom Petty and Tom Petty is still Tom Petty, I’m cheating and listing them both at #5. I don’t think either of them would mind. (song: “Sundress“/”Down South“)

4. Bob Dylan, Modern Times - It’s not a coincidence that I’ve included the two surviving members of The Traveling Wilburys (George Harrison & Roy Orbison = dead. Jeff Lynne = dead to me.) In any given year Bob Dylan could shit in a tape deck and it would still sound better than just about everything else that comes out. He proved that in the 80’s. (song: “Someday Baby“)

3. Herman Dune, Giant - It’s the obligatory “album that’s not out in the U.S. yet, but I’m going to include it anyway.” If it becomes a big hit, I look good for including it, but if it doesn’t I still look good because nobody will realize that it bombed until mid-2007. It’s a no-lose situation. (It’s really, really good though. Seriously) (song: “I Wish That I Could See You Soon“)

2. The Hold Steady, Boys & Girls In America - If I had to pick my favorite song about smoking cigarettes and eating oranges at a rave featuring guest vocals by Dave Pirner from Soul Asylum this year, I’d probably pick “Citrus.” But don’t quote me on that. I’d have to check Wikipedia first. (song: “Citrus“)

1.5. The Strokes, First Impressions Of Earth - Dissing The Strokes is like booing A-Rod. Shut up and just let them do their thing– you’re gonna miss them when they’re gone. (Electricityscape)

1. Destroyer, Rubies - This was my go-to album in 2006. The “I don’t know what to listen to right now” default play on my iPod. The “oh shit, somebody’s coming, I better turn off My Chemical Romance and turn on something more socially acceptable” audible. Thank you for that, Destroyer. Thank you. (song: “In Your Blood“)

Don’t forget Bob’s other venture, The Post Show (www.thepostshow), will be coming back this January and featured on a brand new broadband network.
