Ardent Sessions: John Paul Keith and the One Four Fives

2007 Festival Wrap-Up Part 5 (CMJ)

January 2nd, 2008 by Rachelandthecity

The College Music Journal Marathon (CMJ) was the first music-oriented showcase I ever attended back in 2002. I could not afford the cost of the badge, so I volunteered and ended up working the registration tables - which was awesome cause I got to meet tons of musicians and more importantly, it’s where I saw my very first faux-hawk. True Story.

For anyone who isn’t in “the biz” - this festival of showcases can be a little overwhelming and way expensive. Even a die-hard music lover can get a little sick of live music after 5 days. I actually spent my last night in town at this year’s even seeing a movie - alone!

Although most of the shows are held around the LES, there isn’t a lot of subway action in that area of town, and a couple of trips back and forth to Brooklyn can bust you budget quick. I would love to give you some tips on how to check out CMJ on the cheap - but unfortunately, I haven’t figured that out yet. AT SXSW all the parties either have complimentary food or alcohol, but if there was any swag at CMJ, I seemed to have missed it. Oh wait, I did get handed some condoms at Southpaw.

Now while the party favors were scant - the great performances were not. Here are a few that I checked out:

Oh No! Oh My!

I got to check out Oh No! Oh My! at The Delancey during the Dim Mak showcase and then again later that evening at Galapagos.

Did you know that if you buy your badge by January 8th - you can get it for the low, low price of $250?

You can download a lot of cool songs from bands that may be playing CMJ in 2008 here.
