About
Scenestars is an MP3 blog that has been around since June 2004. That’s the stone age when it comes to music blogs. It has been a group site off and on, but it is the brainchild and baby of Rachel Hurley (aka Rachelandthecity). The site consists of music news, reviews, videos, interviews, and event listings pertaining to mostly indie rock and highlighting Memphis artists.
Rachel Hurley is the host of three popular internet radio shows on Breakthru Radio, they include The Bloggeratti, Live from the Hitone, and most recently The Ardent Sessions. She is also the New Media Consultant for Ardent Studios and moderator for the Ardent Forums. Although she would not consider herself anything more than an amateur photographer, she has logged quite an array of rock photography, most of which can be found on this site. She is also the curator for the Scenestars gallery located within the Hitone Cafe.
Rachelandthecity.com went live in 2003 and is Rachel’s personal website where she recounts stories about her experiences regarding work, travel, love and all things Memphis. She has actually been paid to write for Spin.com, Projectdu.com, The Commercial Appeal, Image Magazine, Breakthruradio.com and various other rags. She has also worked as a music supervisor and associate producer for MTV, VH1, Disney, ESPN and RCN. She is still trying to forget the years she worked in film production on the likes of films such as War of the Worlds, Hustle & Flow, Nowhere to Go But Up, Small Timers, The Big Muddy, and a bunch of independents you have never heard of…
Rachel grew up in Cordova, Tn before it was known as the Dirty Dova. She graduated from Germantown High School in 1992. After spending several years after high school traveling and working at raves (seriously!) she attended the University of Memphis where she studied Philosophy, which basically means she has no tangible skill set. Therefore, she moved away to work in entertainment. After two boring winters in Nashville and five cold winters in New York City, she returned home to Memphis where all the bartenders know her name.
She has decided that if she can pull off walking her dog every morning at 8 AM, everything else is a piece of cake.
